Quick triage & tools

  • Scan all modules: note which modules are missing/online. A wider outage points to power or CAN issues.
  • Voltage first: low voltage can create ghost U-codes. Check battery and charging system.
  • Tools: scan tool, multimeter, wiring diagram access, and basic trim tools for fusebox/module access.

Use: CAN physical layer checks → · Voltage drop testing →

What you need (minimal)

  • Scan tool that can read the TCM (or attempt to) and show module list / network health if available.
  • Multimeter for feed/ground checks at fuses and (ideally) the TCM connector.
  • Wiring diagram pinout for TCM powers, grounds, and CAN High/Low.

Decision flow

  1. Confirm it’s a comms loss, not a request code
    • If you also have P0700, remember: P0700 is just a MIL request. U0101 is the comms problem.
    • Note if the scan tool shows the TCM as “not responding”.
  2. Battery / charging sanity check
If battery voltage is low or unstable, fix that first. Many modules drop off the network under cranking or low system voltage.
  3. Check TCM fuses + ignition feeds
    • Check ALL TCM-related fuses (not just “TCM”). Some vehicles feed it via ECU/IGN circuits.
    • Confirm the feed is present under load (voltage drop test if possible).
  4. Ground integrity
Measure voltage drop from TCM ground to battery negative while cranking / key-on (as applicable). A weak ground can take a module offline.
  5. CAN physical layer check
    • Look for recent work: gearbox swap, water ingress, fusebox disturbance, battery disconnect issues.
    • If multiple modules have U-codes, test CAN High/Low for shorts/opens per the guide.
  6. Wake-up / relay control
Some TCMs need a wake signal or relay control. If power is missing only with ignition ON, trace the relay/command circuit (often ECU-controlled).
  7. If all feeds/grounds/CAN pass
Only now consider module-level failure or programming/coding issues. Confirm water ingress at the module and connector pins first.

Print / save checklist

Tick these off as you work. If you need to hand this to a mechanic, print it as a short job card.

  • Scan all modules, note who is offline
  • Battery/charging checked (resting + cranking)
  • TCM feeds/fuses confirmed under load
  • TCM grounds voltage-drop tested
  • CAN physical layer checks completed
