P0420 is often the end of a story. Check the beginning first.
Before you blame the catalyst
- Fix misfires and fuel-trim issues first.
- Check for exhaust leaks ahead of the rear O2 sensor.
- Verify the front O2 sensor switches correctly and the engine reaches proper operating temperature.
What supports a real catalyst issue
Stable, correct trims and a rear O2 signal that mirrors the front at cruise can support catalyst oxygen-storage loss. But don’t diagnose with a single snapshot.
Make it Vauxhall-specific
