P0300 on VAG TSI/TFSI – Random Misfire Behaviour
Platform-specific notes for VW/Audi turbo petrol engines where misfires can be load-dependent and easy to misdiagnose.
How It Commonly Presents
- Misfires more obvious under load/boost than at idle.
- Often arrives with cylinder-specific codes (P0301–P0304) or fuel trim codes (P0171/P0172).
- May be worse on cold start if carbon build-up is significant.
Common VAG Causes
- Spark plugs: wrong spec, worn, or too wide a gap for tuned/high-boost setups.
- Coil packs breaking down under load.
- PCV diaphragm faults and vacuum leaks (trim drift, rough running).
- Carbon build-up on intake valves (especially on direct-injection TSI/TFSI).
- Boost leaks / diverter valve issues causing lean pockets under boost.
Quick Test Plan
- Record freeze-frame and misfire counters per cylinder while reproducing the event.
- Confirm plug spec and condition; if tuned, consider a tighter gap and appropriate heat range.
- Swap coils between cylinders to see if the misfire follows.
- Check fuel trims at idle vs 2500 rpm (PCV/vac leaks often improve with rpm).
- If cold-start misfires persist, consider intake valve carbon build-up as a prime suspect.
