P0401 on VAG TDI – EGR Flow Insufficient
Platform-specific notes for VW/Audi/SEAT/Skoda diesels where EGR issues and intake contamination are common.
How It Often Presents
- Engine light with reduced efficiency; sometimes limp mode.
- Often appears alongside DPF-related complaints (frequent regens, high soot).
- May cluster with boost/airflow plausibility codes if intake is heavily restricted.
Common VAG Root Causes
- EGR valve sticking or restricted by carbon build-up.
- EGR cooler blockage or leaks (platform dependent).
- Intake manifold fouling (EGR + oil vapour) reducing airflow.
- MAP/MAF plausibility causing the ECU to infer incorrect EGR flow.
Suggested Test Plan
- Check freeze-frame: coolant temp, load and rpm when the fault was logged.
- Review live data: MAF, MAP and EGR duty/commanded position (if available).
- Inspect intake and EGR path for heavy contamination and restrictions.
- Fix airflow/boost leaks before condemning EGR hardware.
What Not To Do
- Don’t jump straight to replacing parts without checking for intake restriction and sensor plausibility.
- Don’t ignore DPF soot load — EGR faults can be both cause and symptom of DPF issues.
