How It Often Presents

  • Engine light with reduced efficiency; sometimes limp mode.
  • Often appears alongside DPF-related complaints (frequent regens, high soot).
  • May cluster with boost/airflow plausibility codes if intake is heavily restricted.

Common VAG Root Causes

  • EGR valve sticking or restricted by carbon build-up.
  • EGR cooler blockage or leaks (platform dependent).
  • Intake manifold fouling (EGR + oil vapour) reducing airflow.
  • MAP/MAF plausibility causing the ECU to infer incorrect EGR flow.

Suggested Test Plan

  1. Check freeze-frame: coolant temp, load and rpm when the fault was logged.
  2. Review live data: MAF, MAP and EGR duty/commanded position (if available).
  3. Inspect intake and EGR path for heavy contamination and restrictions.
  4. Fix airflow/boost leaks before condemning EGR hardware.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t jump straight to replacing parts without checking for intake restriction and sensor plausibility.
  • Don’t ignore DPF soot load — EGR faults can be both cause and symptom of DPF issues.
