P0299 on VAG TDI – Turbo Underboost
Platform-specific notes for diagnosing underboost on common-rail VAG diesels (2.0 TDI and similar).
How It Commonly Presents
- Sluggish torque, especially in higher gears or up hills.
- Sometimes triggers limp mode after sustained load.
- May appear with DPF, EGR or MAF-related codes.
High-Probability Causes on VAG TDIs
- Boost hose leaks, intercooler end tank leaks, or loose clamps.
- Vacuum supply issues (vac pump performance, split vac lines).
- VNT actuator control problems (sticky mechanism or control valve faults).
- DPF overloading causing the ECU to limit torque/boost.
Suggested Test Plan
- Log requested vs actual boost under load (ideally in 3rd/4th gear).
- Pressure/smoke test the charge-air system if possible.
- Check vacuum line integrity and actuator movement where applicable.
- Read out DPF soot load and regen history (rule out after-treatment limiting).
