Plain‑English Explanation

The EVAP system is sealed and periodically tested by the ECU using pressure or vacuum. If the pressure decays more than allowed, but only by a small amount, the ECU logs P0456 as a small leak.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Usually no driveability symptoms.
  • Occasional fuel smell around the car or near the filler area.

Typical Causes

  • Loose, damaged or incorrect fuel cap.
  • Cracked EVAP hoses or plastic lines.
  • Leaking EVAP canister, purge valve or vent valve.
  • Corroded or damaged lines near the tank area.

What To Check First

  1. Inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel cap with a correct OEM‑spec cap.
  2. Check EVAP lines and hoses around the tank and engine bay for cracks or rubbing.
  3. Use a smoke machine to locate tiny leaks in the EVAP system.
  4. Verify purge and vent valves are sealing properly when commanded closed.
