Plain‑English Explanation

The EVAP system stores fuel vapours from the tank and allows them to be burned in the engine via a purge valve. The ECU monitors tank and intake conditions to estimate flow. If the flow is too low, too high or happening at the wrong time, it sets P0441.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Usually no noticeable driveability issues.
  • In some cases, fuel smell around the car.

Typical Causes

  • Sticking or faulty EVAP purge valve.
  • Blocked or kinked EVAP hoses.
  • Small leaks in the EVAP system or faulty vent valve.
  • Incorrectly fitted or missing fuel cap.

What To Check First

  1. Check that the fuel cap seals correctly and is the correct type for the car.
  2. Inspect EVAP hoses for kinks, cracks or disconnections.
  3. Test the purge valve for correct operation with a scan tool or by applying power/vacuum as appropriate.
  4. If equipped, check operation of the EVAP vent valve and charcoal canister for blockage.
