Plain-English Explanation

The ECU uses the MAF sensor to measure how much air is entering the engine. It compares this reading against throttle position, RPM and manifold pressure. If the airflow values are consistently out of an expected range, it flags P0101 for a MAF performance issue rather than a simple open/short fault.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Poor throttle response or flat spots.
  • Rough idle or stalling on some cars.
  • Higher fuel consumption.

Typical Causes

  • Contaminated or failing MAF sensor.
  • Air leaks between the MAF and the engine (unmetered air).
  • Incorrect or oiled aftermarket air filters affecting the sensor.
  • Wiring or connector issues at the MAF.

What To Check First

  1. Inspect the airbox, intake pipework and MAF housing for leaks or loose fittings.
  2. Check the MAF connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  3. Monitor MAF readings at idle and under load; compare with expected values for engine size.
  4. Clean the MAF with appropriate cleaner if contaminated, or replace if readings remain abnormal.
