Typical Symptoms

  • Check engine light with little or no obvious change in performance.
  • Occasional hesitation, roughness or smoke, especially when the valve is sticking.
  • Often seen alongside DPF-related codes.

Common Ford Diesel Causes

  • Carbon build-up in EGR valve, cooler or associated pipework.
  • Sticky EGR valves that do not track commanded position cleanly.
  • Faulty EGR position sensors or wiring issues.
  • On some models, cooling system issues affecting the EGR cooler.

Suggested Test Plan

  1. Use live data to compare EGR commanded vs actual position, particularly during steady cruise and light acceleration.
  2. Check for related codes in EGR, DPF and intake systems.
  3. Visually inspect accessible EGR pipes, connections and, where practical, the valve itself for carbon build-up.
  4. Ensure there are no obvious intake or boost leaks interfering with flow measurements.
  5. If hardware is badly carboned or sticking, plan for cleaning or replacement as appropriate.
