P0401 on Ford TDCi/EcoBlue – EGR Flow Insufficient
Platform-specific notes for diagnosing EGR flow faults on Ford diesels such as Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, Transit and Ranger.
Typical Symptoms
- Check engine light with little or no obvious change in performance.
- Occasional hesitation, roughness or smoke, especially when the valve is sticking.
- Often seen alongside DPF-related codes.
Common Ford Diesel Causes
- Carbon build-up in EGR valve, cooler or associated pipework.
- Sticky EGR valves that do not track commanded position cleanly.
- Faulty EGR position sensors or wiring issues.
- On some models, cooling system issues affecting the EGR cooler.
Suggested Test Plan
- Use live data to compare EGR commanded vs actual position, particularly during steady cruise and light acceleration.
- Check for related codes in EGR, DPF and intake systems.
- Visually inspect accessible EGR pipes, connections and, where practical, the valve itself for carbon build-up.
- Ensure there are no obvious intake or boost leaks interfering with flow measurements.
- If hardware is badly carboned or sticking, plan for cleaning or replacement as appropriate.
