How P0171 Usually Shows Up

  • Check engine light with or without obvious drivability issues.
  • Slight hesitation or flat spots at light/medium throttle.
  • Sometimes combined with P0299 (underboost) or misfire codes.

Common EcoBoost-Specific Causes

  • Unmetered air entering after the MAF due to split hoses or loose clamps.
  • Intercooler or boost pipe leaks, especially after hardware upgrades.
  • MAF contamination or drift where a sensor is fitted.
  • Less commonly, fuel delivery issues leading to genuine lean conditions under load.

Suggested Test Plan

  1. Use live data to check fuel trims at idle and at a steady cruise. Note whether the lean condition is persistent or load-dependent.
  2. Perform a smoke test of the intake and boost system to find any leaks you cannot see.
  3. Inspect and, if needed, clean or substitute the MAF sensor where fitted.
  4. Check for stored P0299 or misfire codes and address obvious boost leaks first.
  5. If trims are high under load but normal at idle, consider fuel pressure checks under driving conditions.
