BMW-Specific Patterns to Consider

  • History of misfires (P0300/P030x) can damage the catalyst over time.
  • Mixture issues (lean/rich) can skew downstream O2 behaviour and set P0420.
  • Oil consumption / turbo seal issues can coat the catalyst and slow its response.
  • Exhaust leaks near the front O2 sensors can cause false efficiency readings.

Quick Test Plan That Saves Money

  1. Check for other codes and freeze-frame history. P0420 alone is rare on healthy BMW petrol engines.
  2. Verify fuel trims and misfire counters (especially at idle + light cruise).
  3. Inspect for exhaust leaks before the cat and at sensor bungs.
  4. If trims/misfires are stable, then evaluate O2 sensor switching and catalyst storage behaviour.

When It Probably Is the Catalyst

  • No mixture problems, no misfires, no exhaust leaks, and the downstream sensor mirrors the upstream consistently.
  • P0420 repeats after a proper drive cycle with stable trims.
