Common BMW Diesel Causes

  • EGR valve sticking or clogged with soot.
  • Intake manifold contamination causing flow issues.
  • Sensor plausibility issues where MAF/air-mass readings conflict.

Why It Matters

A failing EGR system often increases soot output and can accelerate DPF loading. Fixing P0401 early prevents a lot of downstream faults.

Suggested Test Plan

  1. Check for related DPF and air-mass plausibility codes.
  2. Inspect EGR and intake condition; consider cleaning where appropriate.
  3. Verify MAF readings and look for boost leaks that can confuse air-mass calculations.
